The district outperforms North Carolina on nearly every state test — Biology proficiency is 67.3% vs. 58.5% statewide, Math I is 54.7% vs. 42.1%, and English II is 70.9% vs. 64.6%. Those district averages hide wide gaps among schools that closely track poverty and chronic absenteeism.

The district's top schools sit mostly in low-poverty communities. W R Odell Elementary, Cox Mill Elementary, Hickory Ridge Elementary, and Harrisburg Elementary are all 5-star schools ranking in the top 5% of North Carolina, with math proficiency between 84% and 91%. Harris Road Middle and Hickory Ridge Middle rank in the top 5% of the state's middle schools, while Northwest Cabarrus Middle climbed from the 44th to the 85th percentile. The three 5-star high schools are all specialized programs: Cabarrus Health Sciences Institute, Cabarrus-Kannapolis Early Coll, and Cabarrus Early College of Technology each post English II proficiency of at least 93%.
