Summary

Cox Mill High School is a large, comprehensive public high school in Concord, NC, serving about 1,772 students in grades 9–12 as part of Cabarrus County Schools. Ranked 98th out of 662 North Carolina high schools for 2025-2026 (85th percentile, 4 stars), Cox Mill has consistently placed in the 80th–95th percentile statewide over the past decade, peaking at 23rd in the state in 2017-2018. On End-of-Course exams, proficiency rates far exceed district and state averages: Biology 88.6% (vs. 67.3% district / 58.5% state), English II 88.1%, Math I 76.0%, and Math III 92.7%.

Among traditional comprehensive high schools, Cox Mill is clearly the strongest performer in its area. It outranks Northwest Cabarrus High (220th), West Cabarrus High (348th), Jay M Robinson High (379th), North Mecklenburg High (406th), and Mallard Creek High School (443rd). The only schools ranking higher are specialized early-college programs like Cabarrus-Kannapolis Early Coll and Char Eng Early College-UNCC, which are far smaller and selective. Cox Mill also keeps chronic absenteeism remarkably low at 14.0% — roughly half the state average — despite serving a very large student body with a higher student–teacher ratio (21.7) and historically lower per-pupil spending than most neighboring schools.

What truly distinguishes Cox Mill is its effectiveness across student subgroups. English Learner students ranked #1 statewide in 2022-2023 and have stayed among the top 11 schools in North Carolina for three straight years. Students receiving Special Education services rank in the 91st percentile, with strong outcomes also posted for African American, Hispanic, Asian, and low-income students. The school's relative weak spot is Math I proficiency, which has climbed from 60.8% in 2022-2023 to 76%, while Math III remains a standout strength at nearly 93%. For parents, Cox Mill offers the breadth of a large high school combined with impressive academics, strong attendance, and a demonstrated record of supporting diverse learners — making it one of the top public high school choices in the Concord and northwest Charlotte region.

Open Quote Having been a parent with a student at Cox Mill High School for three years, I can honestly say I've been quite impressed. The professionalism of the majority of teachers and staff is excellent. Our older son attended high school in another southern state and I see a marked difference overall in comparison. The previous reviewer mentioned the use of drugs, they are everywhere and if that is what you're drawn to then you would have no problem finding it anywhere, even in high schools. Is Cox Mill a perfect school?...of course not...no school is. In my experience Cox Mill does an excellent job of welcoming parents to get involved and the band program is outstanding. I've also noticed that the students, in general, are very inclusive and supportive of each other. This is a rare and special environment that I am happy to have my student experience. Close Quote

Open Quote the reason i gave this school such a poor rating is because first the lunches there are horrible!for 2.50 you get a scoop of macaroni and a chocolate milk! 2nd would have to be the major drug problem among students (especially athletts)that the staff has made no effort what so ever in correcting. Also in order to get to class you need to literally shove your way through the horribly crowded hallways. I have never seen such a poorly thought out school in all my years of education. Please for future parents thinking about sending your kids here, DO NOT! Close Quote
