Summary

J N Fries Magnet School serves roughly 755 students in grades 6–8 in Concord, NC, as part of Cabarrus County Schools. On the 2025–2026 SchoolDigger rankings, J N Fries is 366th out of 778 North Carolina middle schools — the 53rd percentile with a 3-star rating — placing it right in the middle of the state. That is a dramatic fall from a decade ago, when this school ranked 6th in North Carolina. The magnet label no longer aligns with academic distinction: this school's measurable outcomes now resemble a typical mid-performing middle school.

Test results tell the same story. J N Fries now trails its own district in every subject and grade level tested. The largest gaps are in 8th grade math (14.5 points behind the district), 8th grade science (11.1 points behind), and 7th grade math (11.4 points behind). It still sits near the state average in 6th and 7th grade reading, but 8th grade results — especially in math and science — are below both the district and the state. The neighborhood schools on the other end of the district have held their ground: Harris Road Middle and Hickory Ridge Middle have both stayed in the state's top 5 percent while J N Fries has moved steadily backward.

The school also struggles with attendance and rising poverty. About 21.7 percent of students were chronically absent in 2024–2025 — roughly three times the rate at Harris Road Middle (8.3%) and Hickory Ridge Middle (7.8%). The share of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch is now just over half, up from 41 percent two years ago. Even so, Mount Pleasant Middle serves a similar share of economically disadvantaged students and still outranks J N Fries by more than 60 places, which suggests this downward trend is not inevitable.

Open Quote As a student in the 7th Grade IB Program at JN Fries Magnet School, I can safely say that this school is one of the best schools in Cabarrus County, if not the region and state. This school has offered myself and many other students amazing opportunities, including serving our own community, as well as participating in various clubs, ranging from Math Counts and Quiz Bowl to the Doctor Who Club.

JN Fries offers 2 main streamlines or programs. The STEM program, recognized by the state of North Carolina, and the IB program, which is recognized by the International Baccalaureate Foundation headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.

IB Students are required to take a foreign language, either Chinese or Spanish as well as Career/Technical Ed Course. These students, like myself, operate on an 8-class A Day/B Day schedule, with 4 core classes (ELA, Math, Science, SS) and 4 Encore (Health & PE, Chinese OR Spanish, Art OR Chorus OR Band, CTE Course). The CTE Courses are (6th Grade) Computer Skills and Apps (7th Grade) Agriscience Technology and (8th Grade) Tech Systems.

STEM Students are required to take a class called STEM time, which involves building and other STEM related activities. These students operate on a 6-class schedule in which each student has all of their core classes every day, and have a selection in 1 encore class.

Overall, this school provides many excellent opportunities, and I have certainly experienced the greatness that this school offers. Close Quote
