Summary

Coltrane-Webb Elementary is a small K–5 school in Concord, NC, serving 386 students within the strong Cabarrus County Schools district, and it offers some impressive day-to-day advantages: chronically absent students are rare and class sizes are the smallest among its nearby peers.

Academically, Coltrane-Webb has had a rocky few years. After ranking in the low 200s statewide (82nd–84th percentile) during the 2022–2023 and 2023–2024 school years, the school fell sharply to the 39th percentile in 2024–2025 before climbing back to the 49th percentile in 2025–2026. That recovery is real but uneven. On the plus side, fifth-grade math is a standout — 75.7% of students were proficient, the highest rate among all nearby elementary schools, including Pitts School Road Elementary and R Brown McAllister Elementary. Reading and science, however, remain concerns. In 2025–2026, reading proficiency across grades 3–5 ran roughly 10–15 points below the district, and fifth-grade science sat nearly 16 points behind the district average. The school also trails its near-neighbor R Brown McAllister in most reading grades and in science, a notable reversal from a couple of years ago when Coltrane-Webb was the higher-ranked school.

What makes these trends worth watching is that Coltrane-Webb has strong foundations to build on. Chronic absenteeism was just 14.3% in 2024–2025 — the lowest of any school in its comparison group and well below the district and state averages. The student-teacher ratio of 11.1-to-1 is also the most favorable among nearby schools. At the same time, the share of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch jumped from about 51% to 67% between 2023–2024 and 2024–2025, a significant shift that coincided with the test-score dip. While other high-poverty schools nearby still outpace Coltrane-Webb in several subjects, the school’s attendance and staffing strengths give it a solid platform for responding to changing student needs. The clear priority now is lifting reading performance and closing the wide achievement gaps among different groups of learners — especially students from low-income households and English learners — so that every child benefits from the positive school climate.
