Summary

Northwest Cabarrus High is a traditional public high school in Concord, NC, serving roughly 1,142 students in grades 9–12 from the western Cabarrus County area. It is part of Cabarrus County Schools, a district that ranks among the top quarter in North Carolina. Statewide, Northwest sits at the 67th percentile of high schools with a 3-star rating. Among traditional zoned high schools in the area, that puts it second behind Cox Mill High School. Its student body is economically mixed: about 35% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, a sharp contrast to nearby Concord High and A.L. Brown High, where nearly all students qualify.

The school consistently outperforms most nearby neighborhood schools on state end-of-course exams. In 2025–26, English II proficiency was 71.6%, Biology 67.8%, and Math I 65.9% — all above the district and state averages. Math I is the headline: proficiency jumped from 38.5% the prior year to 65.9%, which is about 20 points higher than Concord High and West Cabarrus High, and dramatically higher than A.L. Brown High. The one relative weak spot is Math III: Northwest beats the state average (74.8% vs. 68.9%) but trails its own district average (78.8%) and West Cabarrus High's 80.2%.

The school also stands out beyond test scores. Its 94.5% graduation rate tops the district's 90.6%, and chronic absenteeism has fallen steadily to 15.7% — far below the state's 24.2% and less than half the rate at Concord High. Subgroup results add to the picture: Special Education students rank at the 85th percentile statewide, up sharply from the 38th percentile two years earlier, and African American students rank at the 78th percentile. One area to watch is Hispanic student performance, which has slid from the 63rd to the 46th percentile over three years. On balance, Northwest Cabarrus High looks like a strong neighborhood-school option for families who want solid academics, good attendance, and above-average graduation rates without an application process.
