Summary

Royal Oaks Elementary is a public K-8 school in Kannapolis, North Carolina, serving 598 students as part of the Cabarrus County Schools district, which is ranked 66 out of 242 districts in the state.

Royal Oaks Elementary has consistently performed above state and district averages in mathematics, reading, and science proficiency, with particularly strong results in 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 8th grades. The school has shown significant improvement in its statewide ranking, moving from the bottom 10% of North Carolina elementary schools in 2014-2015 to the top 34% in 2024-2025. Royal Oaks also demonstrates strong performance across various student subgroups, including female students, African American students, Hispanic students, and white students, all ranking in the top 25-35% of their respective subgroups in the state. The school's gifted and talented program is especially noteworthy, ranking in the top 1% of North Carolina elementary schools.

While Royal Oaks outperforms nearby Kannapolis City Schools, the district as a whole is ranked lower than Cabarrus County Schools. The nearby Concord Lake STEAM Academy, a public charter school, also demonstrates strong academic performance and could be a potential benchmark for Royal Oaks. Despite the school's exceptionally high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, Royal Oaks has been able to maintain its strong academic performance, a testament to its effective teaching and support strategies. The school could focus on improving the performance of English Language Learner (ELL) students and students with special education needs, as well as reading proficiency in the lower grades.

Open Quote I have a son that is now in the fourth grade at this school and he is not on target with his reading and comprehension. I have tried to get the school to get my son where he needs to be in reading and comprehension and it seems that they care much more about a piece of paper being signed by me than working with him in reading and comprehension. Now I have to pay an outside source a lot of money to get my son on grade level where the school and all the teachers have failed him. I did speak to the Principle who would like me to come in so he can explain what is expected of me as a parent. I read the student hand book and all the other paperwork that has come home. I KNOW WHAT IS EXPECTED OF ME. Here is what I expect of those of you that my TAX DOLLARS are paying for: Get my son on grade level reading and comprehension. Do not ever tell me again that my child is useless unless medicated. Do not tell me that he will just eventually get it. YOU PEOPLE WENT TO COLLEGE TO TEACH KIDS AND YOU ARE FAILING A LOT OF THEM BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT RESEARCH BEHAVIORAL PROBLEMS OR MEDICAL PROBLEMS NOR WORK WITH THE STUDENTS THAT NEED THE MOST HELP. IF YOU ONLY WENT INTO TEACHING TO TEACH THE GIFTED KIDS THEN YOU SHOULD MAYBE NOT BE TEACHING IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS. ALL KIDS ARE SPECIAL AND THEY CAN ALL BE TAUGHT IT IS UP TO YOU TO TEACH THEM.
