Summary:

San Juan Unified includes 66 schools: 41 elementary, 9 middle, 15 high, and 1 alternative school, serving students from elementary through high school. Among the nine traditional high schools, average proficiency was 45% in English language arts (ELA), 21% in math, and 30% in science; among the nine middle schools, it was 39%, 26%, and 27%, respectively. State results were 49% in ELA, 38% in math, and 36% in science. The most important finding is how widely results vary between schools, even among schools serving the same grade levels: middle-school scores span 55 points in ELA, 50 in math, and 52 in science.

Bella Vista High led traditional high schools in all three subjects, scoring 64% in ELA, 43% in math, and 49% in science—19, 22, and 19 points above the group averages. At the lower end, Encina High had the group’s lowest ELA and science results, at 14% and 5%. Winston Churchill Middle led middle schools with 65% ELA, 57% math, and 59% science, while Katherine Johnson Middle was lowest in all three, at 10%, 6%, and 7%. Fifth-grade results also diverged: Oakview Community Elementary led in ELA and math, while Green Oaks Fundamental Elementary led in science.

Recent changes were mixed. Traditional-high-school averages rose 1 point in ELA, 1 in math, and 4 in science from 2024–25 to 2025–26; middle-school ELA was nearly flat, math dipped by less than 1 point, and science rose 3 points. Individual schools moved in different directions: Mesa Verde High gained 19 points in ELA and 16 in science, while Rio Americano High fell 19 points in ELA and 11 in science. SchoolDigger’s statewide percentile ranking also shifted for Rio Americano, from 77 in 2023–24 to 50 in 2025–26; Mesa Verde moved from 36 to 46. School characteristics offer context, not an explanation: 2024–25 free/reduced lunch eligible figures were 36% at Bella Vista and 63% at Mira Loma High, while their student–teacher ratios were 24.2 and 22.5.
