Summary

Cottage Elementary is a K-5 public school serving 502 students in Sacramento's San Juan Unified School District, consistently ranking among the lowest-performing elementary schools in California.

The school faces significant academic challenges, with fewer than 20% of students proficient in English and fewer than 9% proficient in Math and Science. Chronic absenteeism, at 24.7%, is higher than district and state averages. While the school serves a population with high economic need, similar nearby schools like Thomas Edison Language Institute and Gateway International achieve notably better results with comparable student demographics, indicating that factors beyond poverty are influencing outcomes.

Compared to other schools in the area, Cottage has a relatively high per-student spending level but also one of the highest student-teacher ratios. Its performance is similar to some schools like Dyer-Kelly Elementary and Howe Avenue Elementary, but far behind higher-performing schools such as Mariemont Elementary. This highlights a wide variation in school performance within the San Juan Unified district and suggests Cottage may be struggling with specific institutional or instructional challenges.

Open Quote This is a great school, the teachers are awesome and really care about the needs of the children and go over and beyond when it comes to the education they provide (Montessori) I will never send my kids to a public school again, kids are able to learn at their own pace and not feel pressured to be at the same or above any other child. This school deserves more then a five star rating in my book and a lot of the others parents of children that attend this school or have in the past would agree. Close Quote
