Summary

Starr King K-8 is a large, K-8 public school in Carmichael, California, serving 885 students within the San Juan Unified School District, but it faces significant academic challenges with proficiency rates far below state averages and a high rate of chronic student absenteeism.

Academic performance at Starr King K-8 is dramatically lower than at most nearby schools in the same district; for example, only 7.39% of students are proficient in math compared to 60% at Mariemont Elementary and 34.77% at Mission Avenue Open Elementary. The school's chronic absenteeism rate of 28.8% is also a major concern, being more than double the rate at schools like Del Dayo Elementary (7.2%). While the school spends more per student than some higher-performing neighbors, these resources have not translated into better outcomes, and the school's statewide ranking has declined over the past decade.

Interesting comparisons show that Starr King K-8 serves a student population with very high economic need, similar to Whitney Avenue Elementary and Cordova Meadows Elementary in the Folsom-Cordova Unified district, which also struggle academically. The school's test scores also vary widely between grade levels, suggesting inconsistency in learning progression. The stark difference in performance between Starr King and higher-achieving schools just blocks away highlights a significant educational disparity within a small geographic area.

Open Quote The school is the worst, fights happen everyday, and bullying is the most usual thing that will happen one day. The staff do NOTHING to prevent that, they never call the bully's parents, actually, they don't even care about any bullied student. DO NOT and I repeat DO NOT!!!! enroll in this school! you will regret everything about it. Close Quote

Open Quote Wonderful principal wonderful staff! The only downside is the drop off and pick up! Very irresponsible parents putting children's safety at risk driving like maniacs.
That the school itself is five stars in my book Close Quote
