Summary

Lichen K-8 is a public K-8 school in Citrus Heights, part of the San Juan Unified School District, serving about 500 students in a community where many families face economic challenges.

Academically, the school's test scores in English, math, and science are below both district and state averages, and it faces a significant challenge with chronic student absenteeism, which is higher than the state average. However, the school is on a positive upward trend, improving its statewide ranking in recent years, and it shows notable strengths in supporting specific groups of students, particularly those in special education and English language learners, who have performed well above state averages. An area of concern is a sharp drop in academic performance as students move into 6th grade, which the school will need to address.

When compared to nearby schools, Lichen performs similarly to others in the San Juan Unified district, like Arlington Heights Elementary and Grand Oaks Elementary. However, schools just a short distance away in neighboring districts, such as William Kaseberg Elementary in Roseville City Elementary and Creekview Ranch in Dry Creek Joint Elementary, achieve much higher test scores and have significantly lower absenteeism, suggesting broader district-level factors may influence school performance.

Open Quote Have been a parent at this school for 8 years. My son is in 5th grade and this is his final year. School appeals to the lowest common denominator and does nothing about bad behavior. Teachers have lost motivation and don't seem to care anymore. Constantly making teachers change grades year after year. Close Quote
