Summary

Encina High is a public high school in Sacramento, California, serving 766 students in grades 9–12 in the San Juan Unified district. In 2025–26, about 14% of students were proficient in English language arts, 2% in math and 5% in science. Chronic absenteeism was 39%, compared with 21% in the district and 18% statewide. The most important concern is that proficiency is very low across all three subjects, with math the clearest weakness.

Encina trails both the district and state in every tested subject. Its proficiency rates were 36 percentage points below the state in English and math, and 31 points below in science; compared with the district, the gaps were 26 points in English and math and 25 in science. Among six nearby high schools serving grades 9–12, Encina had the lowest math result and the second-lowest English and science results, ahead of Vista Nueva Career and Technology High in those two subjects. Science is a relative bright spot: Encina’s 5% proficiency was still low, but its shortfall versus state and district results was smaller than in the other subjects.
