Summary:
The 15 high schools in San Juan Unified include comprehensive campuses as well as alternative, continuation, charter and transition programs; the latest test results are for 2025–2026. Across schools with reported scores, unweighted averages were 44% in ELA, 16% in math and 31% in science, compared with California results of 49%, 38% and 36%. The clearest area-wide concern is math, where the average school trailed the state by 22 percentage points.
Meraki High leads ELA and science, with 94% and 60% proficient, and ranks second in math at 40% despite enrolling just 93 students. Bella Vista High is the strongest large-school all-around performer: it leads math at 43% and is second in ELA at 64% and science at 49%. At the other end, La Entrada Continuation High has 4% in ELA, 0% in math and 10% in science; its chronic absenteeism is also the highest, at 93%, and its graduation rate is 59%. Encina High has the lowest science result, 5%, alongside 14% in ELA and 2% in math.
Recent movement is mixed: for the same 13 schools, average science scores rose 4 points while the state rose 3, slightly narrowing the gap; ELA and math averages rose less than the state results, so those gaps widened slightly. Mesa Verde High posted the largest gains in ELA and science, 19 and 16 points, while Rio Americano High fell 19 points in ELA and 11 in science. SchoolDigger places Meraki at the 89th percentile and La Entrada at the 5th. For context, all schools report a free/reduced lunch eligible measure for 2024–2025; it ranges from 35% at Laurel Ruff Transition to 88% at Encina, but these figures do not explain school results. Results are not perfectly comparable across schools, particularly for small or specialized programs.
