Summary:
Tucson has 254 schools: 138 elementary, 33 middle, 62 high, and 21 alternative schools, serving students across a range of grade spans. The profiles include test results, some graduation and dropout rates, student–teacher ratios, and SchoolDigger rankings. The clearest takeaway is how widely reported proficiency varies: all-grades results range from 5% to 96% in ELA and from 4% to 97% in mathematics, gaps of 91 and 93 percentage points.
University High School stands out in all-grades results, with 96% ELA and 97% mathematics—55 and 64 points above Arizona—and a SchoolDigger ranking of 2nd out of 256, in the 99th percentile with five stars. BASIS Tucson North leads reported 11th-grade ELA at 98%, 60 points above the state result. Strong elementary and middle-school examples include Senita Valley Elementary School, at 73% in both subjects, and Orange Grove Middle School, at 72% ELA and 61% mathematics. At the low end of published all-grades results, Pima County Schools Superintendent's Diploma Program has 5% ELA, 36 points below state, while Billy Lane Lauffer Middle School has the lowest published mathematics result, 4%, 29 points below state.
SchoolDigger ranking percentiles have risen at several high schools, but not everywhere: from 2023–24 to 2025–26, Flowing Wells High School rose from the 42nd to the 58th percentile, while Marana High School fell from the 56th to the 46th. Ratios and school size do not offer a simple guide to results: Rincon High School has a 16.9 student–teacher ratio and 26% ELA, while University High School has a 23.1 ratio and 96% ELA. Likewise, the 2nd-place SchoolDigger ranking for University High contrasts with the 200th-place ranking for Tucson Unified District; they use different comparison groups. Some school scores are suppressed, so the lowest published results are not necessarily the lowest among all Tucson schools.
