Summary

Rio Vista Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-5 in the Amphitheater Unified District in Tucson, Arizona, with 359 students. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Arizona elementary schools over the past several years, receiving 2 out of 5 stars from SchoolDigger, and its performance on state assessments has been below the district and state averages.

Rio Vista Elementary faces significant challenges, with a very high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 66.56% to 82.65% over the past few years. The school's proficiency rates on state assessments are significantly lower than the Amphitheater Unified District and Arizona state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2024-2025, only 22% of 5th graders were proficient in Science compared to 34% statewide. Additionally, Rio Vista has a relatively high student-teacher ratio, ranging from 10.1 to 11.6 students per teacher, which is higher than the nearby schools in the same district.

The nearby schools in the Amphitheater Unified District, such as E.C. Nash School, Helen Keeling Elementary, and Frances Owen Holaway Elementary, also perform poorly, with rankings in the bottom half of Arizona elementary schools. This suggests that the challenges faced by Rio Vista may be systemic to the district, and factors such as resource allocation, teacher quality, and student support services may be contributing to the school's underperformance.

DO NOT SEND YOUR KIDS HERE WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE MY SONS FIRST DAY OF KINDERGARTEN WAS YESTERDAY HE WAS HAVING TROUBLE SO I GOT CALLED TO SCHOOL TO SIT WITH HIM AND IT WAS JUST THE WORST EVER. THE TEACHER MRS GALLAGHER WAS COMPLAINING OVER AND OVER AGAIN ABOUT HOW SHE DIDNT WANNA DEAL WITH THE KIDS ROLLING HER EYES OVER AND OVER AGAIN. THIS LITTLE BOY THAT WAS IN MY SONS CLASS ONLY SPOKE SPANISH HE WAS TRYING TO TELL THE TEACHER that another little boy was hitting him and all they would tell him was I don't understand and walked away once he started becoming very anxious cause the teachers wouldn't take the time of the day to try to understand instead of ignoring him he started acting out and I witnessed the PRINCIPLE GRABBING THE LITTLE BOY BY HIS FEET FACE DOWN DRAGGING HIM OUT ACROSS THE CLASSROM INTO THE HALLWAY. THIS SCHOOL JUST DOESNT WANT TO DEAL WITH KIDS NOT KMOWING ALL KIDS ARE DIFFERENT AND ARENT ROBOTS PATIENCE IS THE KEY TO A SUCCESSFUL CHILD I CAN'T SPEAK ON ALL THE OTHER TEACHERS BUT MY EXPERIENCE WITH MRS GALLAGHER, THE PRINCIPLE AND THE MUSIC TEACHER WAS JUST HORRIBLE THEY SHOULD NOT BE TEACHERS AND I HOPE THE SCHOOL BOARD REALIZES that when this is reported. NOT ALL THE KIDS ARE PERFECT IT IS YOUR JOB TO TEACH THEM NOT TREAT THEM THE WAY THEY DID YESTERDAY. THE THINGS THEY WERE SAYING AND DOING WHILE I WAS THERE MAKES ME WONDER WHAT ELSE THEY DO WHEN NOONE IS THERE THEY DO NOT KNOW HOW TO DEAL WITH CHILDREN VERY UNPROFESSIONAL I REPEAT PLEASE DONT SEND YOUR KIDS HERE IF YOUR CHILDS SAFETY IS IMPORTANT TO YOU.
