Summary

Lulu Walker School is an elementary school in Tucson, Arizona, serving 388 students in grades PK-5. It is part of the Amphitheater Unified District, which is ranked 131 out of 289 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Lulu Walker School consistently performs above the district and state averages in English Language Arts and Mathematics proficiency across grades 3-5. The school has strong performance among its Hispanic and White student subgroups, ranking in the top 30% and top 20% of Arizona elementary schools, respectively, in recent years. However, the school struggles with its Asian, African American, and English Language Learner student subgroups, ranking in the bottom 25% of schools. The school has seen a significant increase in the percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, rising from 36% to 59.89%, suggesting a growing population of students from low-income families. Lulu Walker School has a higher per-student spending of $10,550 compared to the district average of $9,038, and maintains a relatively low student-teacher ratio ranging from 11.6 to 13.7.

When compared to nearby schools, J. Robert Hendricks Elementary outperforms Lulu Walker in certain grade levels for Mathematics, while Lulu Walker generally outperforms its peers in English Language Arts. The school's consistent 3-star rating from SchoolDigger suggests that factors beyond just test scores, such as attendance, discipline, or other school climate measures, may be influencing its overall performance. Additionally, the school faces a noticeable drop in 5th-grade proficiency, particularly in Mathematics, which could indicate a need to examine the curriculum, instructional practices, or support systems for students as they transition to the upper elementary grades.

Open Quote This is the best school I have sent my kids to,the teachers are very caring,my kids are in Mrs. Kurlander's and Mrs.VF and they love to go to school.(great teachers) Our principal is a very good leader. I will miss taking my son there as he moves to sixth grade. The first school they have been to that has such a great peacebuilder program which works. I wish other schools would adopt this program. I feel safe taking my kids there. Keep up the good work Lulu Walker Close Quote

Open Quote The teachers and staff at this school have been exceptional in my experience. They really care about the students, and are more than happy to discuss your child's progress and give any extra help needed for the kids in the class to succeed. My son attended this school during his kindergarten through 5th grade years, and my daughter started kindergarten here this year. Happily, most of the staff and teachers are still there from the time my son attended. Walker is tech savvy, with computers and smartboards in the classrooms, and plenty of opportunites for the kids to use them. There is also a great arts program, with plenty of opportunities for the kids to perform, learn about art and music in weekly classes, and even see the symphony perform. Close Quote
