Summary:

Adams 12 Five Star Schools serves roughly 34,000 students across 53 schools—34 elementary campuses, 7 middle schools, 8 high schools, and 4 alternative schools—in Colorado's north Denver metro area. The district ranks 50th out of 115 Colorado districts, but that average masks tremendous variation. Hulstrom K-8 is the clear academic star, ranked #4 of 943 elementary schools statewide with 92.5% ELA and 85.4% math proficiency, plus the district's lowest chronic absenteeism (5.9%). Stargate Charter School is equally elite at the secondary level, with a 97.8% graduation rate and 98% SAT reading/writing. Among traditional high schools, Legacy High School leads with a #60 state ranking and 95% graduation rate, while Horizon High School posts the district's highest traditional graduation rate (96.8%).

Strong neighborhood elementary options include Meridian Elementary School (#62 of 943) and Coyote Ridge Elementary School (#107), while Thunder Vista P-8 and STEM Lab offer strong P-8 alternatives. The district's biggest challenges are chronic absenteeism (32.2% districtwide) and low math and science proficiency, especially at Thornton High School (6% SAT math) and Northglenn High School (11% SAT math). Thornton Middle School has 62.3% chronic absenteeism and correspondingly low test scores. But there are bright spots in higher-poverty settings: STEM Launch keeps absenteeism at 19.9% and is improving, and Tarver Elementary School exceeds district math proficiency (46.9% vs 35.5%).

The alternative sector is dramatically mixed: Prospect Ridge Academy and Westgate Community School perform well in places, while Five Star Online Academy struggles with 62.2% chronic absenteeism. Parents should know this district contains extremes—graduation rates range from 96.8% at Horizon to 22.2% at New America School - Thornton, and chronic absenteeism ranges from 5.9% to 80.5%. School choice within the district matters enormously, and attendance plus math support are the levers worth investigating when evaluating any school.
