Summary

Hillcrest Elementary School serves 338 students in grades K-5 in Northglenn, Colorado, as part of the Adams 12 Five Star Schools district, where roughly 84% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school has ranked near the bottom of Colorado elementary schools for years, landing in the 8th percentile in 2025–2026 (868th of 943 schools) and spending most of the past decade in the bottom 10%. Chronic absenteeism is a major concern: about 40% of students are chronically absent, well above the district rate of 32.2% and the state rate of 28.4%.

Academic proficiency is far below district and statewide averages. In 2025–2026, only 20.9% of Hillcrest students were proficient in English Language Arts, compared with 42.3% across the district and 44.7% statewide. Math proficiency was just 14.5%, versus 35.5% districtwide and 37.3% statewide, and 4th grade math was especially low at 9.4% proficiency. On a slightly more encouraging note, ELA proficiency climbs from 11.8% in 3rd grade to 27.6% in 5th grade, though math does not show a similar upward pattern.

Hillcrest is part of a cluster of low-performing nearby schools, including Rocky Mountain Elementary, Leroy Elementary, and North Mor Elementary, all of which rank in the bottom 10% of Colorado schools. However, The Studio School, Global Village Academy - North, and STEM Launch all perform substantially better within a mile or two. STEM Launch is a particularly interesting comparison: its poverty rate is similar to Hillcrest's (78.6% vs. 84.3% free/reduced lunch), yet its chronic absenteeism is about half (19.9% vs. 40.3%) and its proficiency rates are much higher. Hillcrest did show meaningful year-over-year improvement in 2025–2026, with ELA rising from 14.9% to 20.9% and math from 10.3% to 14.5%, but it remains well below the middle of the state distribution.

Open Quote The teachers and staff work so hard for my and all children to grow. My kids learned so much and grew more at Hillcrest than any other school they attended. The teachers are very caring and always go above and beyond to support all student needs. Close Quote

Open Quote My children had attended Hillcrest Elementary School for 3 years and I loved the teachers and their individual time they gave to my kids. They loved my kids as they were their own and always treated me with full respect. I was informed on everything that was going on with my children even after school hours. They had nothing but positive things to say about my kids and when or if suggestions were needed they were always positive with the negative to help myself as well as my kids grow in a positive way. Thank you Hillcrest Staff!!! Close Quote
