Coronado Hills Elementary School is a PK–5 school in Thornton, CO, serving 412 students as part of Adams 12 Five Star Schools. The school has struggled academically for years, ranking in the 3rd percentile statewide (0 stars) in 2025-2026, with just 14.6% of students proficient in ELA, 10.2% in math, and 13.5% in 5th grade science—far below district averages of 42.3%, 35.5%, and 35.6%. About 81% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and chronic absenteeism reached 46.1% in 2024-2025, up sharply from 37.7% the prior year.

The most striking finding is that nearby Mapleton School District No. 1 schools significantly outperform Coronado Hills despite Mapleton's lower district ranking. Within about a mile, Welby Community School of the Arts posts 33.1% ELA proficiency, Global Primary Academy 29.2%, Adventure Elementary 28.5%, and Monterey Community School 26.5%—all well above Coronado Hills' 14.6%. These schools also have lower chronic absenteeism (28.8% to 42.4%) than Coronado Hills' 46.1%. Even the school's Adams 12 neighbors—Thornton Elementary, North Star Elementary, and McElwain Elementary—perform similarly poorly, suggesting school-level factors are driving outcomes, not just district reputation.

Within the school, some grade levels are especially concerning: 3rd grade ELA proficiency is just 6.4%, and 4th grade math is 5.2%. However, 5th grade science is a relative bright spot, outperforming several nearby schools.
