Summary

Stellar Elementary School is a K-5 school in Thornton, CO, serving 418 students within the Adams 12 Five Star Schools district. The school's most recent state ranking places it in the 40th percentile (566th out of 943 Colorado elementary schools), a step down from the previous year's 50th-percentile performance. Stellar serves a high-poverty community: 67.9% of students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024-25, up notably from 55.7% two years earlier. Chronic absenteeism was 27.6%, which is slightly better than the district (32.2%) and state (28.4%) averages.

In 2025-26, Stellar's ELA proficiency was 41.0%, close to the district (42.3%) and state (44.7%) averages, and it improves steadily by grade—from 31.4% in 3rd grade to 48.5% in 5th grade, nearly matching the state average. Math is a bigger concern: 30.2% proficiency, well below district (35.5%) and state (37.3%), and it declines as students advance, from 32.9% in 3rd grade to 27.7% in 5th grade. Compared with nearby schools, Stellar outperforms Woodglen Elementary School, which serves a nearly identical poverty rate, but trails more affluent neighbors like STEM Lab and Hulstrom K-8.

Stellar does relatively well when compared with its most demographically similar schools. Woodglen, for instance, has nearly the same poverty rate but much lower scores in ELA (28.0% vs. 41.0%), math (18.0% vs. 30.2%), and science. However, nearby schools with lower poverty and lower absenteeism, such as Tarver Elementary School and Prairie Hills Elementary School, post far higher results. Test scores at Stellar have been volatile, with math swinging from 38.0% to 30.2% and science dropping sharply in 2025-26. Subgroup results suggest the school serves Hispanic students and low-income students better relative to their statewide peer groups than it does male students—a pattern worth exploring with the school.

Open Quote We have our third child in this school and until this year we couldn't have been happier. The new principal has let some members of the staff bully and berate the students here (especially older kids). If you have to send your kids here the Kindergarten and 1st grade teachers are awesome, but move your kids somewhere else after that. Close Quote

Open Quote Great school for all types of learners. My son went from a low reader to being on grade level. He loves the teachers and the principal. The PTO is a fun group to be a part of. I would highly advise people to send their children to Stellar!! Close Quote
