Summary

Westlake Middle School in Broomfield, CO, serves 853 students in grades 6–8 and stands out as a top-quartile school within the Adams 12 Five Star Schools district. The school ranks 102nd out of 469 Colorado middle schools, placing it in the 78th percentile with a 4-star rating — and it has earned 4 or 5 stars every year since at least 2015–16. That consistency is notable given that the district itself ranks 50th out of 115 Colorado districts. Academically, Westlake is strong across the board: 59.5% of students are proficient in English Language Arts, 48.5% in math, and 47.3% in 8th-grade science — all well above state averages.

Westlake outperforms every nearby middle school in both ELA and math proficiency. It beats Broomfield Heights Middle School, which belongs to the Boulder Valley School District No. Re2, a top-5 district in Colorado, by 3 points in ELA and nearly 10 points in math. The gap is even wider compared to same-district schools: Thornton Middle School posts just 7.5% ELA proficiency and 4.7% math proficiency, while Northglenn Middle School is only slightly higher. Westlake also has better attendance than most neighbors, with a 23.8% chronic absenteeism rate, below the district average of 32.2% and the state average of 28.4%. And it achieves these results with a student-teacher ratio of 18.6 — the highest among all nearby middle schools, meaning larger class sizes rather than smaller ones.

Westlake also shows strong results for most student groups. Students from low-income families jumped from the 20th percentile statewide to the 72nd percentile in a single year — a dramatic improvement from 1 star to 4 stars. The one area to watch is the Gifted and Talented program, where the subgroup ranks in the 30th percentile statewide, down from 47th the previous year. Overall, Westlake is a consistent, high-achieving school that delivers results well above its district and state averages, making it a standout choice for Broomfield families.

Open Quote As a former student here I can say that while many of the teachers are astounding such as the graphic design teacher and the male spanish teacher, many of the other staff are oftentimes too strict or just flat out mean to their students. Throughout my 3 years at Westlake, I found the number of staff that actually seem to care about students and not just their grades is about 10 or 11. There are many things that happen at Westlake that are often kept between students alone. I have found students doing drugs, drinking alcohol as well as other illicit activities. I cannot recommend this school to anyone with a clear conscience. Close Quote
