Forest Pines Drive Elementary is a PK–5 public school in Raleigh, NC, serving 493 students within the highly rated Wake County Schools district. The school's own statewide standing is more middling: for 2025-26 it ranks 870th of 1,492 North Carolina elementary schools, placing it at the 42nd percentile with a two-star rating. That is a modest improvement over the prior year, but it sits well below the school's historical peak in 2015-16, and its ranking has swung between the 34th and 67th percentiles in recent years.

The most striking difference between Forest Pines and its neighbors is economic need: in 2024-25, 99.4% of students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch, up sharply from about 60% in the two prior years. Nearby schools serve far more mixed-income populations—North Forest Pines Elementary, essentially right next door, has a free/reduced lunch rate near 42%. Academic proficiency trails the Wake County Schools average in nearly every subject and grade, with the widest gaps in 3rd grade math (43% vs. 73% districtwide) and reading (42% vs. 65%). There are positive signs, though. By 5th grade, students narrow the gap substantially and outperform state averages in math and science, and certain student groups—such as Hispanic, multiracial, and English learner students—perform well relative to their peers across North Carolina. Those results are uneven, however, and students from low-income households and those receiving special education services are among the weakest statewide. In a neighborhood of strong options, Forest Pines performs at a level closer to Wakefield Elementary than to Heritage Elementary, Abbotts Creek Elementary, or Wake Forest Elementary, most of which rank in the top quarter of the state. Given the high concentration of poverty and absenteeism, the clearest paths to improvement are boosting daily attendance and strengthening early-grade literacy and math instruction.

I've had one child go K-5, and two who are currently enrolled in this school. Overall, I think it's pretty good. The basic academics are sound, and we've never had a bad teacher. Some have been truly outstanding, including my son's current kindergarten teacher. All except one teacher, and this is my 7th year of having kids in this school, have been extremely responsive to e-mail inquiries. They seem to be very willing to go the extra mile.

Discipline does not seem to be a problem it is quiet and orderly in the hallways classrooms are louder but still under control. The building itself is fairly new (2008?) and very clean and appears to be well maintained. All classrooms have windows with natural lighting.

Administration is responsive to concerns. Excellent instruction differentiation for English Language Arts.

Cons: one-size-fits-all for math instruction. After 3rd grade, large (approaching 30) class sizes. No foreign language, tech/computer education, or band. No gifted services until 3rd/4th even though technically it's supposed to be available beginning in K. Limited extra-curriculars. They did just start a 4th/5th grade choir, and 3-5th grade girls have option of participating in a running program. That's about it.

Up until a few years ago, this was a Title 1 school due to of low income families. It no longer qualifies for the extra funding, but still has a fairly large low income population, based upon free/reduced lunch participation. Close Quote
