Summary

Westhill High School is one of the largest comprehensive public high schools in Stamford, CT, serving 2,224 students in grades 9–12 within the Stamford School District. Located in an urban, high-poverty community, more than half of Westhill students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The school's academic results are mixed: the 85.5% graduation rate is below the state average of 91.2%, and 11th-grade proficiency is 51% in ELA, 21.1% in math, and 28.3% in science — with reading close to state levels but math and science well behind.

Westhill's most pressing challenge is chronic absenteeism, which affects 33.4% of students — the highest in the region, ahead of Stamford High School (28.1%), Norwalk High School (27.8%), and Brien McMahon High School (26.6%), and nearly double the state average. Math proficiency is also a significant concern: only 21.1% of Westhill juniors are proficient in math, compared to 31.3% statewide, and far behind affluent neighbors like New Canaan High School (73.1%) and Darien High School (77.2%).

Compared to its direct district counterpart, Westhill posts a higher graduation rate (85.5% vs. 81.5%) but also higher chronic absenteeism. The gap with The Academy of Information Technology & Engineering, a magnet school just over a mile away, is striking: it serves a similar low-income population yet achieves a 97.8% graduation rate and significantly better test scores across the board. Westhill's lowest-income students rank in the bottom 16th percentile statewide, showing the school has yet to close achievement gaps for its most disadvantaged learners. Reducing absenteeism and targeting support to struggling subgroups are the clearest opportunities for turning the school around.

Avoid sending your child here at all costs. You will need to spend extra on tutoring to ensure your child is college-ready, particularly in STEM.

Student body is becoming more unruly each year, with a full-on riot last year that required 9 cop cars to break up.

Bullying is rampant. The administration would rather keep the status quo than make any meaningful change or create a quality learning environment.

There are some good teachers but the curriculum is all over the place and not consistent from grade to grade. Our child graduated this year and he couldn't wait to leave. Close Quote
