Per-pupil spending is $18,882, higher than most district peers, and the student-teacher ratio is a favorable 11.5 to 1.

Academically, Rippowam is ranked 215th of 258 Connecticut middle schools (17th percentile, 1 star), making it the lowest-performing middle school in Stamford and the lowest among all nearby schools compared here. Test scores trail the district and state by wide margins: only 24.4% of 6th graders meet English language arts proficiency and just 12% meet math proficiency, versus 44.4% statewide in math. Math is a particular area of concern — Rippowam's math scores are the lowest among every nearby middle school in every grade tested, including high-poverty peers like Cloonan School and Turn of River School. Meanwhile, Scofield Middle School, which spends about $2,000 less per student, posts ELA proficiency rates roughly double Rippowam's. Subgroup outcomes are also weak across nearly every demographic category.

There are encouraging signs. Chronic absenteeism has fallen sharply, from 35% in 2023–24 to 19.2% in 2025–26, slightly below the district average. English Language Learners have historically been a bright spot, ranking in the 81st percentile statewide in 2021–22. The gap with affluent neighboring districts is extreme — Saxe Middle School, Eastern Middle School, and Middlesex Middle School rank among the top six middle schools in Connecticut, though their student populations differ greatly. For parents, the bottom line is that Rippowam offers relatively high spending and small classes, but academic outcomes — especially in math — remain a serious concern, and the school's ranking has declined steadily in recent years.
