Summary:

Kern High includes 25 schools, all serving grades 9–12, with results that vary widely from school to school. In 2025–26, the average school proficiency rate was 42% in ELA, 15% in math and 22% in science, compared with state figures of 49%, 38% and 36%. The clearest area-wide concern is math: the school average was 23 points below the state, and only one school scored above the state average.

Stockdale High leads the group in all three core subjects, with 73% proficiency in ELA, 41% in math and 51% in science; it also exceeds state results in each. Frontier High is another strong all-around option and has the highest reported graduation rate, 98%. At the other end, Vista West Continuation High is lowest in ELA and science, while Central Valley High (Continuation) and Nueva Continuation High are tied at 0% in math; Nueva also reports 0% in science. A distinct subject strength appears at Arvin High, whose reported CSA Spanish overall result is 37%, compared with 28% for the district and 10% for the state.

Recent trends are mixed, and the school averages did not keep pace with state gains: from 2024–25 to 2025–26, ELA fell by about 1 point, while math rose by about 1 and science by about 2; the state improved in all three. SchoolDigger’s current percentile rankings also show a wide spread, from the 84th percentile for Stockdale to the 5th for Vista West. Income measures offer context, not an explanation: in 2024–25, 44% of Stockdale students and 36% of Frontier students were free/reduced lunch eligible, while Highland High had 87% eligible and still recorded 54% ELA proficiency. Some schools are small continuation programs, so their results may be less stable and settings are not fully alike.
