Summary:

ZIP code 93301 has nine schools—three elementary, one high school and five alternative schools—with different grade spans and enrollments ranging from 179 to 3,069. Across the schools, average 2025–2026 results were 29% in English language arts (ELA), 17% in math and 20% in science, below state rates of 49%, 38% and 36%, respectively. The clearest area-wide finding is that Downtown Elementary was the only school above state benchmarks in both ELA and math, and it also led in science.

Downtown Elementary scored 64% in ELA, 54% in math and 57% in science—15, 16 and 21 percentage points above the state, respectively. Valley Oaks Charter was the science runner-up at 42%, 6 points above the state, and posted the strongest listed graduation rate: 95%, compared with 88% statewide. At the other end, Kern County Special Education had the lowest ELA result, 2%, and tied Kern County Juvenile Court at 0% in math. Science was 0% at Kern County Community and Juvenile Court.

Year-over-year, the average ELA result fell by about 1 percentage point, while average math and science results were essentially unchanged; state rates rose by under 1 point in ELA, 1 in math and 3 in science. Valley Oaks was a notable exception: its science score rose 11 points, and its chronic absenteeism was 4% versus 18% statewide. SchoolDigger’s statewide percentile was 79 for Downtown and 1 for Stella I. Hills Elementary. School context also varies: Downtown reported 31% free/reduced lunch eligible (FRL) and Franklin Elementary 88%, both for school year 2024–2025; these figures describe context, not a cause of results.
