Kenai Peninsula Borough School District

The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District serves roughly 8,500 students across 41 schools — 17 elementary, 4 middle, 9 high, and 11 alternative programs — spanning remote coastal villages, small towns, and the Soldotna/Kenai area along Alaska's south-central coast. The district ranks #10 among 23 Alaska districts with a 3-star rating, and it outperforms statewide averages in English language arts, math, and science by roughly five to six points in each subject.

The district's academic leaders are concentrated among its charter and choice elementary schools. Aurora Borealis Charter School is Alaska's #1-ranked elementary school, with math proficiency near 91 percent and science near 87 percent — both more than double the district average. McNeil Canyon Elementary climbed from #76 to #4 in the state over two years and posts strong results even though nearly half its students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Soldotna Montessori Charter School also holds a 5-star rating and ranks #15 statewide. At the secondary level, River City Academy is the district's top-ranked high school at #4 in Alaska, while Homer High School excels in science with 71 percent of 10th graders proficient.

The district's biggest challenge is high-school math: no traditional high school reaches even 25 percent proficiency on 9th-grade math. Kenai Central High School and Soldotna High School graduate more than 92 percent of students, yet their 9th-grade math proficiency sits around 17–19 percent. At the middle level, Seward Middle School is now a 0-star school with the district's lowest middle-school math scores. Small rural schools such as Marathon School and Cooper Landing School post volatile results due to tiny enrollments, and alternative programs vary widely — Connections serves more than 1,100 students with solid academics, while Kenai Alternative High School graduates just 30 percent of students.
