Summary

Kenai Central High School is a traditional 9–12 public high school in Kenai, Alaska, that serves about 525 students within the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District and is the second-largest comprehensive high school in the local area, behind Soldotna High School.

Kenai Central currently ranks 34th of 62 Alaska high schools (45th percentile) for 2025–26, a steady recovery from a low point in 2022–23, and about 36% of students qualify for free/reduced-price lunch. Graduation is the school’s clearest strength: its 94.0% rate for 2024–25 beats the districtwide rate of 85.0% and tops nearby schools, including Soldotna (92.5%) and Nikiski Middle/Senior High School (83.7%); Kenai Alternative High School, by comparison, reports 30.4%. English language arts is also strong, with 40% of 9th graders proficient versus the state’s 31.2% and Soldotna’s 29.1%. Math looks low at 19.2%, but that is for 9th grade only and actually matches the district and state 9th-grade average of 17.9% while edging out Soldotna’s 17.0%; the district’s much higher All-Grades figure of 38.4% includes middle-school grades, so it isn’t a fair comparison.

Science is more mixed: Kenai Central’s 10th-grade proficiency rate of 36.0% is above the state’s 33.0% but below the district’s 44.4% and substantially behind Nikiski Middle/Senior High School (60.0%) and River City Academy (54.6%). The school’s effectiveness also varies across student groups — it earns high marks for some groups, while multiracial students saw a sharp one-year decline in the most recent data; small group sizes make these rankings unstable and best viewed with caution. Overall, parents will find a large traditional high school with excellent graduation outcomes, solid reading results, typical Alaska 9th-grade math performance, and an improving statewide ranking, though science and subgroup consistency are worth watching.
