Summary

Homer High School is a public high school in Homer, AK, serving 357 students in grades 9–12 as part of the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District. The only other school in the immediate area is Homer Flex School, a much smaller alternative-style high school about a third of a mile away, which means Homer High serves as the area’s main comprehensive high school.

Homer High posts a notably high graduation rate of 94.6% for 2024–2025, about 10 points above the district average and roughly 25 points above Homer Flex’s 70%. In science, Homer High also stands out: 71% of students were proficient in the latest testing year, compared to 60% at Homer Flex, 43.9% districtwide, and 37.8% statewide. English language arts and math results are more uneven. In 2024–2025, ELA proficiency was 67.1% and math was 50.6%, both well above district and state averages, but the next year’s reported rates fell to 40.9% in ELA and 20% in math, with the math figure dropping below district and state levels. That latest data appears to reflect only 9th-grade scores, which may explain part of the swing, but it remains an area to watch.

Homer High’s statewide ranking has been volatile, ranging from 2nd out of 60 Alaska high schools in 2024–2025 to 18th out of 62 the following year. Even with those swings, graduation rates have stayed consistently strong — between 90.9% and 96.3% over the last five years — and science proficiency has climbed steadily from 44.8% in 2022–2023 to 71% in the latest results. Homer Flex’s lower student–teacher ratio and higher poverty rate suggest it serves a different, more individualized mission, so comparing the two schools directly can be misleading. For parents, the key takeaway is that Homer High is a traditional high school with excellent graduation outcomes and growing science achievement, though reading and math performance can shift significantly from year to year.
