Skyview Middle School

Skyview Middle School serves 355 students in grades 7 and 8 in Soldotna, AK, as part of the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District. In the 2025–2026 school year, Skyview ranked 57th out of 90 Alaska middle schools, placing it at the 37th percentile statewide with a 2-star rating — barely ahead of nearby Kenai Middle School, which ranked 60th.

On state tests, Skyview is the stronger school in reading and math. In 2025–2026, English language arts proficiency reached 35.33% (above Kenai's 33.24% and the state average of 32.89%). Math proficiency hit 38.74%, topping Kenai's 35.71% and exceeding both the district and state averages. The 8th-grade math class was a particular bright spot at 41.46% proficient. Skyview has also climbed out of a recent slump: after a 1-star rating in 2023–2024, the school improved its ELA proficiency from 23.17% to 35.33% and its math proficiency from 32.36% to 38.74% within two years. Science, however, is Skyview's biggest weakness. At just 31.29% proficient, it trails the state average by about 6.5 points and falls well behind Kenai's 37.25% — a notable gap given that both schools serve similar communities.

Looking deeper, Skyview shows some uneven outcomes. Special education students ranked near the bottom of Alaska middle schools, at the 13th percentile statewide. Economically disadvantaged students consistently scored around the 26th–31st percentile, and female students ranked lower than male students in subgroup comparisons. While these equity gaps are real concerns, the overall trajectory is encouraging: Skyview has improved from the 18th percentile in 2023–2024 to the 37th percentile today, and its recent gains in ELA and math show the school is moving in the right direction. The challenge ahead is to extend that progress to science and to every group of students it serves.
