Summary

Kenai Middle School is a public school in Kenai, Alaska, serving 408 students in grades 6 through 8 within the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District. The school currently ranks in the lower third of Alaska middle schools — 60th out of 90 — earning a 2-star rating for the 2025–2026 school year. That places it just behind nearby Skyview Middle School in Soldotna, but the two schools are not exactly alike: Kenai serves a higher percentage of students from lower-income households (about 43% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, versus 33% at Skyview) and includes 6th graders, while Skyview begins at 7th grade.

The most important takeaway from Kenai's test data is that schoolwide scores hide big differences between grade levels. Sixth grade is where the school struggles most: only about 24% of 6th graders are proficient in math and 31% in English language arts, both well below district and state averages. The upper grades tell a stronger story. Eighth grade math is a genuine bright spot, with 49% proficiency — roughly 16 points above the state average and more than 7 points above Skyview's 8th graders. Kenai also outpaces Skyview in 8th grade science, with 37% proficiency compared with Skyview's 31% in the most recent school year.

Results for different groups of students at Kenai are uneven. Girls have generally scored higher than boys relative to statewide averages, and boys have received consistent 1-star ratings in recent years. Special education outcomes have also declined, dropping from the 55th percentile in 2022–2023 to the 14th percentile the following year. Kenai has not returned to its pre-pandemic form — it was a 3-star school before 2020 but has spent the last five years in the lower third of Alaska middle schools. Still, when you focus on grades 7 and 8 and account for the school's demographic profile, Kenai is more competitive with Skyview than the headline numbers suggest. It is a school with real strengths in upper-grade math and science, but with a clear concentration of difficulty in 6th grade.
