Summary

Newark High School is a public high school in Newark, Ohio, serving grades 9–12 as part of Newark City Schools, with 1,369 students. That makes it the largest traditional high school in its area — more than 1.5 times the size of Granville High School, about 2.3 times Licking Valley High School, and nearly 5.3 times Millersport Junior/Senior High School.

By the numbers, the school has been slipping. Newark High ranked 593 of 795 Ohio high schools in 2025–26 (25th percentile, 1 star), down from the 65th percentile and 3 stars in 2020–21. That 25th percentile was the lowest among nearby traditional high schools, with Utica High School next at 30th, while Granville High School (96th) and Heath High School (86th) ranked far higher. Test proficiency was below the state average in all six reported subjects, including Algebra I (54.2% vs. 61.6%) and English II (57.1% vs. 62.7%). Chronic absenteeism stands at 38.2% — the highest among the nearby high schools and well above the district's 28.0%. The graduation rate of 84.7% is above the district's 80.8% but below every nearby high school (92.2%–99.5%).

Context matters: 64.91% of students qualified for free or reduced lunch in 2023–24, and the student-teacher ratio was 19.7 in 2024–25. There are bright spots — Gifted and Talented students ranked in the 72nd percentile with 4 stars, and Foster Care and Homeless students also earned 4-star results, though those groups are very small. The clearest priorities for improvement are attendance, Algebra I, Geometry, and English II, along with reversing recent dips in American Government, American History, and Biology.

Open Quote Levy after levy passed, to the benefit of the teachers and the administrators. Upgraded buildings, then tore them down and built new ones. Great teacher to student ratio, lousy liberal teachers and administrators. Students suffer! Please, DO NOT ever send your child to a Newark public school! More money and more tax levies cannot fix this! ONLY parents that refuse to send their children to substandard schools can do that! PARENTS, PLEASE STAND UP! Close Quote
