Summary

McGuffey Elementary School is a K–5 neighborhood school in Newark, Ohio, one of seven elementary schools in Newark City Schools, serving 415 students — the second-largest elementary enrollment in the district. In 2025-26 it ranks 1,086 of 1,560 Ohio elementary schools, about the 30th percentile with 2 stars, down from a peak of the 47th percentile in 2021-22 — a 17-percentile-point decline in four years.

The most telling comparison for families sits inside its own district. McGuffey averages 51.1 percent proficiency across tested subjects in 2025-26, while Hillview Elementary School averages 79.4 and Legend Elementary 77.3 — same district, same grade span, similar enrollment and per-student spending ($8,858 versus $8,972). Carson Elementary School (61.9), John Clem Elementary School (61.2) and Cherry Valley Elementary School (60.2) also outpace it. Attendance is the standout success: chronic absenteeism dropped from 36.4% in 2021-22 to 17.7% in 2025-26, third-best among the seven Newark elementaries. Class size is favorable too, at 14.1:1 — the second-lowest in the comparison group.

Yet only one of seven tested measures — 5th-grade science at 66.1% — is at or above the state average. Math is the deepest concern: 50.0 in 3rd grade, 46.2 in 4th and 37.1 in 5th, all 12 to 22 points below the state, with 5th-grade math the lowest figure posted by any Newark City elementary in 2025-26. Subgroup results slipped as well: special education fell from the 64th percentile in 2024-25 to the 31st, and low-income students from the 50th to the 36th. Because attendance and staffing already look strong — and Cherry Valley performs higher on a smaller per-pupil budget — the evidence points to classroom instruction, especially upper-elementary math, as the biggest available lever. One caveat: 2024-25 poverty figures are not reported by the state, and spending data dates to 2018-19.
