Summary

Ronald E. McNair Elementary is a public elementary school located in Browns Summit, North Carolina, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 458 students. The school is part of the Guilford County Schools district, which is ranked 142 out of 242 districts in North Carolina and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite its diverse student population, Ronald E. McNair Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom 20% of North Carolina elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past several years. The school's proficiency rates in Mathematics, Reading, and Science are significantly lower than the Guilford County Schools and North Carolina state averages across all grade levels. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, only 29.5% of 3rd graders at Ronald E. McNair were proficient in Mathematics, compared to 62.4% in Guilford County and 64.1% statewide.

The school's extremely high percentage of students (over 99%) eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high-poverty student population, may be contributing to its academic challenges. However, the school performs relatively better in serving English Language Learners, ranking in the top 15% of North Carolina elementary schools for this subgroup. Addressing the persistent underperformance and effectively meeting the needs of all students will likely require a comprehensive, data-driven approach that focuses on targeted interventions, resource allocation, and collaboration with the broader community.

Open Quote This school is unorganized from Principal down to the secretary. Just because you hold a title or have a masters degree in certain field. Does not make that person intelligent. I see why their ranking is low. They terminate any staff who challenge their direction. The office staff are there just there collect a pay check. This school was created to get BLACK PEOPLE out the northern school district. And force BLACKS into sub par GHETTO mentality ,unorthodox, saturated with Smart Dummies ran School. The school does realize it is almost 2020 not 1920. I have seen daycare facilities with better education structure and organization. Close Quote
