Summary

Rankin Elementary is a Pre-K through 5th grade public school in Greensboro, NC, serving about 673 students as part of the Guilford County Schools district.

Rankin is one of the lowest-performing elementary schools in North Carolina, ranking in the 11th percentile statewide. Nearly all students (99.55%) qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and poverty alone doesn't explain the school's struggles. The most urgent concern is attendance: 45% of students were chronically absent in 2024–2025 — the highest rate among nearby district-run elementary schools like Brightwood Elementary (33.9%) and Ronald E. McNair Elementary (36.8%), and far above the state average of 24.2%. Even compared with its closest peers, Rankin's academics lag. While Waldo C. Falkener Senior Elementary and Bessemer Elementary rank at the bottom with Rankin, schools like James Y Joyner Elementary (21st percentile) and Irving Park Elementary (48th percentile) serve similarly high-poverty populations with much better results.

Rankin's test scores reveal a striking pattern. Third-grade math proficiency (69.2%) actually beats both the district and state averages, and third-grade reading is close to normal. But scores fall off a cliff after that: fourth-grade math drops to 38.1% and fifth-grade math to 27.2%, while fifth-grade science sits at a very low 29.1%. This suggests early-grade instruction may be working, but students are not carrying those gains through upper elementary. There are also genuine bright spots: English Language Learner students at Rankin ranked in the 56th percentile statewide in 2025–2026, a notable strength given the school's overall record. Special education outcomes remain weak, and an extremely high rate of chronic absenteeism makes academic recovery difficult. For parents, the bottom line is that Rankin has serious challenges in grades 4 and 5 and an attendance problem affecting nearly half its students, but there are pockets of success school leaders can build on.
