Summary

Guilford Preparatory Academy is a public charter elementary and middle school located in Greensboro, North Carolina, serving 607 students from kindergarten through 8th grade. While the school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of North Carolina elementary schools over the past 10 years, it has shown some strengths in serving specific student populations.

Academically, Guilford Preparatory Academy's performance on state standardized tests is generally below the state and Guilford County Schools district averages. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in Mathematics ranged from 26.6% in 8th grade to 72.9% in 3rd grade, compared to the state averages of 48.7% to 64.1%. In Reading, the school's proficiency rates ranged from 35.6% in 3rd grade to 58.6% in 4th grade, compared to the state averages of 46.7% to 58.1%. However, the school's performance for African American students and students with special needs is stronger, ranking in the top 133 and top 42 out of 918 and 821 North Carolina elementary schools, respectively, in the 2024-2025 school year.

Guilford Preparatory Academy's student population is unique, with 99.18% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in the 2023-2024 school year and 72.9% of students being African American in the 2024-2025 school year. This high concentration of students from low-income backgrounds likely contributes to the school's academic challenges, which are also reflected in its performance compared to nearby schools like Brightwood Elementary and Summit Creek Academy. However, the school's small student-teacher ratio and its strengths in serving specific student populations suggest that it may have effective strategies in place that could be built upon to improve overall academic outcomes.
