Summary

Brightwood Elementary in northeast Greensboro, NC, serves 488 students in grades PK-5 as part of Guilford County Schools, with more than 99% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. The school has made meaningful progress over the past decade, climbing from near the bottom of North Carolina's elementary rankings in 2015-2016 to a 29th-percentile state rank in 2025-2026—the best of any nearby Guilford County elementary school, ahead of James Y. Joyner Elementary (21st percentile), Reedy Fork Elementary (19th), and Ronald E. McNair Elementary (18th).

Brightwood has genuine academic bright spots. In 5th grade, 72.9% of students were proficient in science—beating both the state average (67.7%) and the district average (62.0%)—and it was the highest rate among all nearby schools, including charters. Fifth-grade reading also stands out at 57.1% proficiency, above district (52.5%) and state (55.3%) averages, and second only to Summit Creek Academy, a charter school less than a mile away. Subgroup results tell a similar story: African American students rank at the 56th percentile statewide, students from low-income families at the 49th percentile, and special education students at the 60th percentile—all stronger than the school's overall 1-star rating might suggest.

However, there are clear trouble spots. Fourth-grade math proficiency sits at just 23.8%—a dramatic gap compared with the district (57.0%) and state (61.4%)—and has been declining for three straight years. Hispanic students and English Language Learners also trail, with ELL students dropping from the 85th percentile in 2021-2022 to the 13th percentile in 2025-2026. Perhaps the biggest structural challenge is chronic absenteeism: 33.9% of students missed enough school to be considered chronically absent in 2024-2025, well above the state rate of 24.2% and far higher than charter peers like Summit Creek Academy (8.4%) and Aggie Academy (15.2%).
