Summary

Reedy Fork Elementary is a public PK–5 school in northeastern Greensboro, NC, serving about 538 students as part of Guilford County Schools. In the most recent statewide rankings, the school placed in the 19th percentile (1 star) — a significant step back from two previous years when it ranked at the 44th percentile with a 2-star rating. The school serves a high-poverty population: about 99.4% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. That places Reedy Fork in the same economic context as nearby Rankin Elementary, McLeansville Elementary, and Brightwood Elementary — but in sharp contrast to Northern Guilford Elementary, only a few miles away, where 18% of students qualify and the school ranks in the 96th percentile statewide.

Academically, Reedy Fork trails both the district and the state in every tested subject. Math proficiency is roughly 53–55% — within about 3 to 11 points of state averages — but reading proficiency is more concerning, ranging from about 36% to 43% by grade, compared with 55–58% statewide. Fourth-grade reading is the most urgent signal at 35.7% proficiency. The school's chronic absenteeism rate of 26.9% is better than the district average of 29.2% and better than several nearby schools, including Ronald E. McNair Elementary at 36.8% and Rankin Elementary at 45%.

The most encouraging news is that Reedy Fork showed real improvement in 2023–24 and 2024–25, when several scores met or exceeded district averages. The most recent decline appears to be a broad schoolwide challenge rather than an issue isolated to any one group of students. Notably, Monticello-Brown Summit Elementary — a nearby school with nearly identical demographics — outperformed Reedy Fork in most subjects in the latest year, a reminder that high-poverty schools can achieve strong results. Attendance has also improved steadily since the pandemic, dropping from 41.9% chronic absenteeism in 2020–21 to about 27% today. The path forward includes focused early literacy support and close attention to special education and gifted learner outcomes.
