Summary

Northeast Guilford High is a traditional public high school in Mc Leansville, NC, near Greensboro, serving roughly 977 students in grades 9–12 as part of Guilford County Schools. The school has spent years in the bottom fifth of North Carolina's high school rankings; its newest state rating places it 532nd out of 662 schools with a 1-star rating at the 20th percentile. Nearly all of its students — 99.69% — qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. On End-of-Course exams, Northeast trails its district and state in every subject. Only 27.7% of students are proficient in Math I, and English II proficiency (44.1%) lags the state average by more than 20 points.

The school's most visible weakness is its graduation rate. At 83.1%, it is nearly ten points below Guilford County Schools' 93.0% average and clearly under the 88.8% statewide rate. Nearby traditional high schools serving equally high-poverty populations perform better: Page High, James B Dudley High, and Eastern Guilford High all graduate at least 91% of students on time. Chronic absenteeism is also acute — 41.1% of Northeast students are chronically absent versus 24.2% statewide. Northern Guilford High shows the contrast, with chronic absenteeism of just 15.2% and a graduation rate above 94%.

Spending and class size do not explain the gap. Northeast spends about $10,865 per student and has a roughly 14-to-1 student-teacher ratio, a lower ratio than many neighboring schools, while Northern Guilford spends less ($7,983) and still gets sharply better results. Nearby program-based schools with similar poverty levels, such as Middle College at GTCC-Greensboro, rank in the upper half of North Carolina high schools, proof that demographics alone are not destiny. There is encouraging news: every End-of-Course subject improved in the latest year, marking Northeast's best results in several years after a particularly poor 2024–2025. If that momentum can be paired with real progress on attendance and on-time graduation, the school has a path out of the state's lowest tier.
