Summary

Ferndale Middle is a 6–8 public middle school in High Point, NC, serving 486 students in the Guilford County Schools district. The school serves an extremely high-poverty student population—99.4% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch—and currently ranks in the 20th percentile statewide, earning 1 star. That ranking is low, but it marks real progress: Ferndale's percentile has risen from 7 in 2021–22 to 9, 14, 13, and now 20 in 2025–26, with math proficiency roughly doubling since 2022–23.

The biggest challenge is attendance. Chronic absenteeism reached 42.0% in 2024–25—the highest among nearby schools such as Jamestown Middle (24.2%), Trinity Middle School (25.4%), Southwest Guilford Middle (35.0%), Allen Jay Middle (16.2%), and Welborn Middle (11.5%). Although the rate has dropped from 59.4% in 2020–21, it remains about 18 points above the state average, meaning nearly half of students are missing substantial instructional time. Academically, Ferndale trails its district and the state in every tested grade and subject. Reading is the greatest concern: 6th-grade reading proficiency is 34.7%, compared to 48.8% for the district, 54.8% statewide, and 54.5% at Jamestown Middle. Ferndale does outperform Welborn Middle in several subjects, and 8th-grade science (55.2%) is a relative strength, though results have been volatile.

There are genuine bright spots. Ferndale's English Language Learner students rank in the 71st percentile statewide (4 stars), gifted students in the 81st percentile, and special education students jumped from the 18th to the 69th percentile in a single year. Those results suggest specific programs are working well for particular groups—and that replicating those strategies could lift outcomes for all students. With its 20th percentile ranking, the school is showing its best momentum since at least 2016–17. The path ahead is clear: spread what works for Ferndale's strong subgroups across the whole student body while continuing to reduce absenteeism from its very high 42% level.
