Summary

Southwest Guilford Middle is a large public school in High Point, North Carolina, serving 1,032 students in sixth through eighth grade as part of Guilford County Schools. Over the past decade, the school’s state ranking has steadily slipped. In 2015–16, it placed in the 72nd percentile (191st of 692 middle schools) and earned four out of five stars. By 2025–26, it had fallen to the 37th percentile (487th of 778 schools) with a two-star rating — below the midpoint of the state after once being an above-average performer.

Reading is the school’s clearest academic strength. On the latest state tests, students reached reading proficiency at rates of 53% to 55% in every grade — above the district average in each case. Math is more concerning: sixth grade math roughly matches the district average at 53.0%, but proficiency drops to 43.9% in seventh grade and just 38.8% in eighth grade, about 14 points below the statewide average. Eighth grade science also trails the state (58.5% vs. 68.6%). Students who need the most support face the toughest odds: special education students and English learners each rank in the 10th percentile compared with similar students across North Carolina.

Chronic absenteeism is another concern. In 2024–25, 35.0% of the school’s students were chronically absent — well above the district rate of 29.2% and the state rate of 24.2% — and that figure has stayed between roughly 32% and 35% for several years. Nearly all students (99.71%) now qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. But poverty does not have to set the ceiling. Kernodle Middle, about nine miles away in the same county, serves an almost identical population: 98.16% economically disadvantaged. Yet it reached the 76th percentile statewide, achieved 66.8% proficiency in eighth grade math, and kept chronic absenteeism to 18.4% in 2024–25. That comparison shows the school’s challenges are serious, but not fixed: better attendance and stronger math results are clearly possible at schools serving the same kinds of students.
