Summary

Oak Hill Elementary is a Pre-K through 5th grade school in High Point, North Carolina, serving 411 students through Guilford County Schools in one of the area's highest-poverty neighborhoods; about 99% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The school's statewide ranking has dropped sharply, from the 35th percentile in 2017-2018 to #1,452 out of 1,492 North Carolina elementary schools in 2025-2026 — the bottom 3% of the state. Proficiency rates fall far below district and state averages in every subject: just 9.5% of 5th graders are proficient in math and 23.8% in reading, versus roughly 63% and 55% statewide.

Chronic absenteeism is also a major barrier: about 40% of Oak Hill students were chronically absent in 2024-2025, compared with 29.2% across Guilford County Schools and 24.2% statewide. Math proficiency drops from 48.4% in 3rd grade to 19.0% in 4th grade to 9.5% in 5th grade, showing students fall further behind as they move up. Yet nearby schools prove poverty alone does not explain these results. Hasty Elementary serves a nearly identical student population yet ranked in the 67th percentile statewide, and Johnson Street Global Studies, less than three miles away, ranked in the 47th percentile with 4th grade math proficiency above 69% — compared with Oak Hill's 19%. Montlieu Academy of Technology and Triangle Lake Montessori Elementary also serve high-poverty populations and outperform Oak Hill by a wide margin.

Bright spots do exist. Oak Hill's English Learner students rank around the 33rd percentile statewide among schools serving ELL students — by far the school's strongest subgroup result. Third-grade reading proficiency has also climbed from 19.3% to 40.6% over two years, suggesting early literacy efforts are gaining traction. These signs, together with the success of neighboring high-poverty schools, indicate that stronger outcomes are achievable. The key challenge ahead is expanding this momentum into math and the upper elementary grades while making real progress on chronic absenteeism.
