Welborn Middle is a public magnet middle school located in High Point, North Carolina, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 407 students. The school is part of the Guilford County Schools district, which is ranked 142 out of 242 school districts in North Carolina and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Welborn Middle consistently underperforms compared to the Guilford County Schools district and the state of North Carolina in terms of proficiency rates on End-of-Grade (EOG) tests for Mathematics, Reading, and Science. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, Welborn Middle's proficiency rates were significantly lower than the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. Additionally, Welborn Middle has been ranked in the bottom quartile of North Carolina middle schools for the past several years, with rankings ranging from 647 out of 691 schools in 2017-2018 to 682 out of 773 schools in 2024-2025.

When comparing Welborn Middle to other nearby schools within the Guilford County Schools district, such as Southern Guilford Middle, Allen Jay Middle - A Preparatory Academy, and Ferndale Middle, Welborn Middle consistently underperforms on academic measures. These nearby schools, while still facing challenges, generally have higher proficiency rates and better overall rankings compared to Welborn Middle. The high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, as well as the school's low rankings and subgroup performance, suggest that Welborn Middle may be serving a population with significant socioeconomic and educational challenges, which likely contribute to the school's overall academic struggles.

Open Quote This is a terrible school. With no good leadership. A lot of the kids bully with no consequences. The principal is hardly there to deal with any situations. They punish the victims instead of the bully's by making the victims change classes instead of moving the bully's. It is the definition of insanity. Keep your kids safe and happy by not putting them in this terrible school where fights break out on a regular basis. It's the worst. Close Quote
