Summary

Salk Middle School is a grades 6–8 school in north Spokane serving 658 students at 6411 N Alberta St. within the Spokane School District, near several other middle schools in Spokane, Mead, and West Valley.

Salk is currently ranked 339th out of 514 Washington middle schools, placing it in the 34th percentile with a 2-star rating. Its academic results are mixed: 40.45% of students met standards in English language arts, 24.72% in math, and 46.94% in science in 2025–26. Math is the clearest challenge, with proficiency below 30% in every grade. ELA also varies considerably by grade: 8th-grade performance reached 54.87%, above both district and state results, while 6th-grade ELA was 27.83%. Science is a relative bright spot and is slightly above the district average. Compared with nearby schools, Salk performs well ahead of Denny Yasuhara Middle School, Shaw Middle School, Garry Middle School, and Glover Middle School overall, but trails Sacajawea Middle School and the stronger nearby Mead schools.

The school serves a relatively high-need community, with 62.16% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024–25—higher than Highland Middle School, Northwood Middle School, and Mountainside Middle School. Salk’s ranking has improved from the 23rd percentile in 2022–23 to the 34th percentile today, supported by strong science gains and gradual math improvement. However, its $19,356 per-student spending in 2023–24 was higher than at several better-performing nearby schools, suggesting that families and school leaders may reasonably want to understand how resources are being directed. Overall, Salk appears to be a recovering school with promising science and 8th-grade literacy results, but math and earlier-grade literacy remain important areas for improvement.
