East High

East High is a public grades 9–12 school in Salt Lake City serving about 1,764 students in the Salt Lake District, a large urban district ranked 60th of 92 Utah districts. The school’s latest statewide ranking is 124th of 139 high schools, placing it in the 11th percentile with a 1-star rating. This is a notable decline from the 28th percentile the previous year and reflects a generally weak performance profile compared with several nearby comprehensive high schools.

Academic results are a major concern. In 2025–2026, proficiency at East High was below both district and state averages in all six reported English Language Arts, mathematics, and science measures. Grade 10 ELA fell sharply from 47.6% to 24.7%, while grade 9 ELA declined from 44.7% to 28.5%. The school’s 2024–2025 graduation rate was 78.2%, slightly above the district’s 77.4% but well below Utah’s 89.8%. West High, which has a similar free- or reduced-price lunch rate, outperforms East High in ranking, graduation, dropout, absenteeism, and all six tested subjects. The differences are even larger with Highland High and Olympus High, which have much stronger academic and attendance outcomes. East High does have a somewhat lower student-teacher ratio than these large nearby schools, but that advantage has not yet translated into stronger results. Schoolwide data also show substantially weaker effectiveness for low socioeconomic status, Hispanic, and English Learner students than for White students, highlighting the need for targeted student supports.
