Summary

West High is a large public school in Salt Lake City serving grades 7–12, with 2,503 students in the urban Salt Lake District. The school serves a higher-need community, with 53.22% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. Its current statewide ranking is 110th of 139 Utah schools, around the 21st percentile, but that overall rating does not tell the whole story: results are exceptionally strong in grades 7–8 and much weaker in grades 9–10.

The middle-grade results are a major strength. In 2025–26, 7th-grade math proficiency was 100%, while 8th-grade science reached 98.8%; 7th- and 8th-grade ELA, math, and science results were all far above state averages. By contrast, high-school results were generally below state and district averages. Proficiency was 23.1% in 10th-grade math, 30.9% in 9th-grade math, and 35% in 10th-grade ELA. Science was comparatively stronger, especially in 9th grade. This sharp transition suggests that ninth-grade support, high-school math instruction, and continued academic monitoring should be important priorities for families.

West High has several positive completion trends. Its 86.0% graduation rate is above the Salt Lake District average and higher than East High’s 78.2% and Innovations Early College High School’s 64.5%. Its 12.2% dropout rate and 26.1% chronic absenteeism rate have also improved, although attendance remains a concern. Highland High and Vanguard Academy report stronger recent high-school academics, while West High compares favorably with several nearby schools on graduation and dropout outcomes. The largest challenge is ensuring that academic gains reach students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
