Summary

Franklin School is a PK–6 elementary school in Salt Lake City serving 325 students in the Salt Lake District, an urban area where the school serves a highly economically disadvantaged student population.

Academic results are a major concern. In 2025–26, Franklin School ranked 559th out of 563 Utah schools, placing it in the 1st percentile. RISE proficiency was below district and state averages in every tested subject. English language arts ranged from under 10% in third grade to 19.5% in fifth grade; math was below 20% in every tested grade, including 6.5% in sixth grade; and science ranged from 16.7% to 24.4%. Sixth grade stands out as especially challenging across all three subjects. These results are also weak compared with several nearby schools serving similarly disadvantaged populations. For example, Mountain View School ranked in the 22nd percentile and had much stronger proficiency results, while Edison School ranked in the 13th percentile.

Attendance is another important issue, although it has improved: chronic absenteeism declined from 53.0% in 2021–22 to 44.3% in 2024–25. That remains higher than the district’s 29.3% and Utah’s 23.8%, and was higher than most nearby schools, including Washington School and Backman School. One potential strength is Franklin School’s student-teacher ratio of 12.7, the lowest among the nearby schools compared. Families may want to ask how staffing is used for attendance outreach, small-group instruction, literacy and math intervention, and progress monitoring. Nearby Wallace Stegner Academy shows a much stronger overall profile, though its student population and school structure differ.
