Summary

Highland High is a large traditional public high school serving grades 9–12 in Salt Lake City, with 1,973 students. It is part of the urban Salt Lake District and ranks considerably higher than the district overall. Highland is ranked 36th out of 139 Utah schools, placing it around the 74th percentile and earning four stars. Its long-term trend is encouraging: the school ranked 101st in 2015–16 but has generally remained in the upper half of Utah schools since 2020.

Academically, Highland High exceeded both district and state proficiency rates in all six reported 2025–26 assessments. English Language Arts is the clearest strength: 56.6% of 10th graders and 54.3% of 9th graders were proficient. Mathematics was more mixed, particularly in Grade 10, where proficiency was 34.0%, although that still exceeded the state rate. Highland outperformed nearby East High and West High in every directly comparable subject and grade. Its results were close to Olympus High, while Skyline High was stronger overall, especially in science.

Student-outcome results show both strengths and areas to watch. Highland’s 2024–25 graduation rate was 83.6%, above the district’s 77.4% but below Utah’s 89.8%; its dropout rate was 14.4%, better than the district but higher than the state’s 8.5%. Chronic absenteeism was comparatively favorable at 20.6%, below both district and state rates. Parents may also want to note that Highland’s effectiveness varies by student group, with a notably weaker statewide ranking for students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Overall, Highland offers stronger-than-average academics and improving statewide standing, but graduation, dropout, Grade 10 mathematics, and recent declines in some test results deserve continued attention.

As a senior who has experienced four years at Highland, I would never pick a different school. There is an amount of diversity at Highland that you cannot find anywhere else. Everyone is very welcoming to all. The teachers are all very helpful and the student body is very united and proud of their school spirit. I think that it is a really great school where you can learn about life at the same time that you are studying and preparing for college. Close Quote
