Hunter High is a large public school in West Valley City serving grades 9–12, with 2,480 students in the Granite District. Its 24.4-to-1 student-teacher ratio and 53.06% free- or reduced-price lunch rate reflect a large, diverse school community with substantial student-support needs. Hunter’s overall ranking is low—134th of 139 Utah high schools in 2025–26—and its academic results have remained near the bottom statewide for most of the past decade.

The biggest concerns are academic proficiency and attendance. Only 10.7% of ninth graders were proficient in mathematics, compared with 23.6% across the district and 39.4% statewide. Science and English language arts results were also below district and state levels, with ninth-grade science at 19.9%. Still, Hunter’s results are not the lowest among nearby large Granite District schools: it generally performed better than Cyprus High and Kearns High in several tested subjects, while Taylorsville High was the stronger academic comparison.

Graduation is Hunter’s clearest relative strength. Its 84.5% graduation rate was higher than the rates at Taylorsville High, Cyprus High, Granger High, and Kearns High, and its 15.2% dropout rate was the lowest among those nearby schools. By comparison, smaller or differently structured schools such as Itineris Early College High and Vanguard Academy report stronger academic and attendance outcomes, but they are not direct matches in size or school model. Overall, Hunter appears better at keeping students on a graduation path than its testing results suggest, but improving daily attendance—especially in support of ninth-grade math and science—remains essential.
