Vanguard Academy is a public school serving grades 7–12 in West Valley City, Utah, with 623 students. Located near several large traditional high schools and smaller specialized programs, it offers a mid-sized setting and ranks among Utah’s stronger schools overall. It placed 30th of 139 schools in 2025–2026, in the 78th percentile, with four stars. Its performance is notably stronger than nearby Taylorsville High, which ranked in the 15th percentile, and Granger High, which ranked in the 4th percentile. Mathematics is Vanguard’s clearest strength. In 2025–2026, 63.9% of ninth graders and 55.9% of tenth graders met proficiency standards, compared with 39.4% and 29.4% statewide. Math performance was also above the state in Grades 7 and 8. Science results were generally strong as well, with Grade 10 proficiency at 51.0%, compared with 39.3% statewide. English language arts was more mixed: Grade 10 was strong at 57.1%, above the 48.2% state rate, while Grade 7 was 32.5% and Grade 9 was 38.3%, both below the state. This suggests that strengthening literacy during the transitions into Grades 7 and 9 could be a useful priority.
Vanguard stands out for serving economically disadvantaged students effectively. Its low-SES subgroup effectiveness ranked 2nd of 97 schools statewide in 2025–2026, at the 98th percentile, while 68.7% of students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024–2025. Attendance is another advantage: chronic absenteeism was 9.3%, less than half the statewide rate of 23.8% and far below the rates reported at Taylorsville and Granger. The increase from 3.2% the prior year is worth monitoring. Current school-specific graduation data were unavailable, but Vanguard’s older rates—95.9%, 100.0%, and 97.0% from 2017–2018 through 2019–2020—were excellent.
