Summary

John Clem Elementary School is a K–5 school at 475 Jefferson Rd in Newark, Ohio, serving 386 students in Newark City Schools. It ranks 873rd of 1,560 Ohio elementary schools (44th percentile, 2 stars), modestly above its own district's standing of 497th of 773 districts. About two-thirds of students (68.61% in 2023–24) qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, so results should be read with that context in mind.

Attendance is John Clem's standout strength. Its chronic absenteeism rate of 13.6% is the lowest among the seven Newark City elementaries and roughly half the district's 28.0%, down from 36.8% in 2021–22 — a sustained improvement rather than a one-year fluke. Class sizes have also tightened, from 16.9 students per teacher in 2022–23 to 14.9 in 2023–24 and 2024–25.

Test results are uneven and "front-loaded." John Clem beats its district in 3rd-grade math (67.3 vs. 61.0) and ELA (65.5 vs. 64.3) and in 5th-grade science (75.0 vs. 72.2, more than 12 points above the state), but trails it in 4th-grade math and ELA and in 5th-grade math (41.7 vs. 58.9) and ELA. Six of seven tested areas improved in 2025–26, with big jumps in 3rd-grade ELA (+22.6), 3rd-grade math (+14.9) and 4th-grade ELA (+15.4); only 5th-grade math slipped. The school also moved from the bottom third to the top third statewide for its special education (21st to 68th percentile) and low-income (27th to 61st percentile) students. Nearby Legend Elementary (1.0 mi, 74th percentile) and Hillview Elementary (2.6 mi, 76th) score higher despite John Clem's smaller classes and better attendance. Granville Elementary and Stevenson Elementary serve far less poverty.
